About Us

We are your local community connection for quality meats, friendly service and great prices.

The D'Alessandro family has owned and operated Fourth Avenue Supermarket in Bessemer, Alabama for more than 60 years. Frank D'Alessandro, Sr. and his wife Pru opened the original Fourth Avenue Supermarket in 1951. The D'Alessandro's have roots in the grocery industry and saw a need to supply local residents and businesses with fresh produce and quality meats. The original store was small, about the size of a one-story single-family home.

Over the years and as the business grew, Frank continued to expand his product line and soon became one of the largest employers in Bessemer.

For 40 years the business was a staple of the community, then tragedy struck. In March, 1991, the original store burned to the ground. Frank vowed to reopen the business as quickly as possible. In just six months, a larger, more modern store was constructed on the opposite side of the property from the original building. The new store opened in October, 1991.

Frank instilled his love of serving the community in his sons, Frank, Jr. and Gerry, Sr. As the second generation D'Alessandros' ran the family business, Frank, Sr. continued on as its ambassador. You can still see Frank, Sr. from time to time greeting customers in the store today!

Third generation owner Gerry, Jr. is carrying on the family business now. Starting as a bagger when he was a young boy, he worked every job in the store, learning everything he could about the grocery business.
